Today, it's hard to imagine a GPS that doesn't list landmarks, street names, or even exit numbers.‎ Every bit of visual information we can get from map symbols and text makes navigating easier and faster.‎ The same is true for a PCB, yet we often overlook a great opportunity to provide a wealth of information about our PCB's design on the silkscreen.‎ The information we can, and should, supply on PCB silkscreens should go beyond component outlines, reference designators, and pin 1 indicators.‎

In this paper I'll describe and display some of the enhancements you can make to your PCB designs' silkscreens that can add value at both the bare board and assembly levels and from the test bench to the installation.‎

Navi Radjou: Creative problem-solving in the face of extreme limits

Navi Radjou has spent years studying "jugaad," also known as frugal innovation.‎ Pioneered by entrepreneurs in emerging markets who figured out how to get spectacular value from limited resources, the practice has now caught on globally.‎ Peppering his talk with a wealth of examples of human ingenuity at work, Radjou also shares three principles for how we can all do more with less.‎ 

The diagnostic odds ratio: a single indicator of test performance

Diagnostic testing can be used to discriminate subjects with a target disorder from subjects without it.‎ Several indicators of diagnosticperformance have been proposed, such as sensitivity and specificity.‎ Using paired indicators can be a disadvantage in comparingthe performance of competing tests, especially if one test does not outperform the other on both indicators.‎ Here we propose the use of theodds ratio as a single indicator of diagnostic performance.‎ The diagnostic odds ratio is closely linked to existing indicators, it facilitatesformal meta-analysis of studies on diagnostic test performance, and it is derived from logistic models, which allow for the inclusion ofadditional variables to correct for heterogeneity.‎ A disadvantage is the impossibility of weighing the true positive and false positive rateseparately.‎ In this article the application of the diagnostic odds ratio in test evaluation is illustrated.‎

Happy New Year and welcome to 2015!‎ It is my great pleasure to report that TBME has continued doing well in 2014.‎ Thanks to the editors and reviewers, whose dedication keeps TBME running efficiently every day and ensure the publication of only the best in TBME. Thanks to our authors for submitting their major discoveries and innovations, which continue to define the field of BME and reflect the nature and reputation of TBME. In the past year, TBME received 2066 submissions from 66 countries with an average time from submission to first decision of 30 days.‎ The overall acceptance rate was 20.‎32%.‎ The TBME website attracted 35,447 viewers from 142 countries.‎  The TBME ۶۰th Anniversary Special Issue contains 20 review articles which have been downloaded over 16,700 times.‎

IBM creates new SyNAPSE chip to further cognitive computing

IBM unveiled Thursday a neurosynaptic computer chip that it says will open new computing possibilities for cloud, mobile and distributed sensor applications.Built with non-von Neumann computer architecture, IBM said the postage stamp-sized chip achieves an unprecedented scale of one million programmable neurons, 256 million programmable synapses and 46 billion synaptic operations per second, per watt.At 5.‎4 billion transistors, IBM said the chip is currently one of the largest CMOS chips ever built, while also managing to consume only ۷۰mW of power by running at biological real time.‎ Building on previously demonstrated neurosynaptic cores with on-chip, online learning, IBM said it envisions building learning systems that adapt in real-world settings, as the underlying architecture could at some point exploit advances in future memory, 3D integration, logic and sensor technologies.‎
