BRAIN AND NEUROSCIENCE

       Vision

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders that could affect people at any age. In most cases, seizures are controlled with medications. However, in cases when seizures are not controlled by medication, or when patient cannot tolerate the side effects of medications thenresective epilepsy surgery is considered as alternative treatment. Using multimodal noninvasive neuroimaging techniques such as long-term video-EEG monitoring, ictal/interictal SPECT imaging and structural MRI is common practice in pre-surgical evaluations. Evidence about impaired brain activity and structure which is provided from different imaging methods has to point to a common seizure focus otherwise localization of the epileptogenic zone would be difficult or impossible. Recent clinical and analytical studies provide growing evidence that combined analysis of different imaging results (instead of analyzing each one separately) considerably increases the precision of the seizure focus localization. In this research core we aim to design and implement a software for automatic localization of the seizure focus using combined analysis of EEG, SPECT and MR images.
